Artwork Care

Pencil & Pastel Paintings

Painting Surface

  • I use quality acid-free paper and specific surfaces like sanded artist paper for my drawings.
  • My pencil and pastel artwork is not varnished. It is not necessary and I don’t recommend it since the spray varnish bears the risk for loosing color vibrancy of the drawing.
  • The use of the right painting surface and an adequate framing is all what is needed for pencil and pastel artwork.

Framing

  • An appropriate framing of the artwork under glass with a Passe-partout (mat) is necessary for all pencil or pastel drawings and paintings and it protects the painting surface from dust, and against UV light. The mat ensures space between the glass and the painting surface and protects it from smearing of pigments.
  • The framing needs to be done in a conservational manner. This means the artwork is completely enclosed and dust-free sealed in the package of the foam-board, mat and glass.
  • If you buy an artwork without framing from me, I highly recommend the service of your local framer for a quality finish.

Where to hang your Artwork?

  • Chose a nice well-lit place or use spots to illuminate the artwork hanging on your wall.
  • It is very important to not hang the painting exposed to direct sunlight! The non-reflective UV-protection glass blocks off a certain amount of ultra violet waves from the painting surface. But an intense exposure to direct sunlight over a long period of time will harm the color pigments and lead to fading of the artwork.

Cleaning of the Frame and Glass

  • Dust can be regularly, gently wiped from the frame by using a soft broad brush or lint-free duster.
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth slightly wetted with purified water to clean the frame and glass if necessary. Afterwards, dry and polish the glass with a lint-free paper towel or cloth.

Acrylic Paintings

Varnish

  • My acrylic paintings are protected with a UVLS Varnish (brand: GOLDEN). The varnish is applied in 2-3 thin layers with a brush and protects the painting surface from dust/ dirt and against UV light.

Framing

  • No glass for the framing is needed.
  • My already framed acrylic paintings are completed with high quality wooden frames in adequate appearance for your viewing pleasure. They come ready to hang with metal hangers and wire attached on the back.
  • If you buy an unframed painting from me, please consider to have it professionally framed. Your local framer can help you with the choice for quality products to use.

Scratchboards & Clayboards

Varnish

  • The surface of a Scratchboard is delicate and needs protection. Therefore, my Scratchboards are protected with a UVLS Varnish (brand: GOLDEN). The varnish is spray applied in 4-6 thin layers with an airbrush. The varnish protects the painting surface from scratches, dust/dirt and against UV light.
