For birders visiting Costa Rica, this bird is always high on the wish list. I was fortunate to find the Three-wattled Bellbird in the wet premontane forests of Monteverde.

Surrounded by primary rainforest vegetation it was a beautiful moment to hear the male birds penetrating calls in the canopy. It truly is a sound from another world and furthermore ranking among the loudest voices in the avian world.

I watched two male birds showing territorial behavior, singing and throwing their funny rubber-band like wattles around their heads. What an oddly beautiful bird!
