I am fascinated by the charisma of the lion, which has grown a voluminous mane. The pastel work shows a Katanga Lion (Panthera leo bleyenberghi), also called South African Lion. This is a subspecies that lives in southwestern Africa. My work offers a up-close view to the wild cat's face and glance. My aim was to show the soft color-gradient of the impressive mane from golden brown to raw umber. It was a fantastic challenge to work on all the fine details among each square centimeter of this painting.
