Prominent Perch

This scratchboard features the largest kingfisher of the Americas, the Ringed Kingfisher.

Last year, when the water level of Lake Arenal was low, some old tree stumps and branches were exposed near the shore. It was a perfect spot for the kingfishers to perch, and it was a great opportunity for me to watch them from closer up. Now, this memory is captured in this piece.

I enjoyed adding color to this piece. I think it gives the bird a nice, characteristic look and gently elevates the subject from the monochromatic rendition of vegetation in the background.
